The International Society of Explosives Engineers is proud to recognize Bill O’Brien as the recipient of the Industry Service Award at the 51st Annual ISEE Conference. This distinguished honor is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to ISEE and the explosives industry over time.
With over 30 years of experience in explosives regulation, safety, and industry collaboration, Bill O’Brien has played a vital role in shaping the relationship between the explosives industry and regulatory oversight. His career with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been marked by a commitment to effective communication, industry engagement, and public safety.
✅ Beginning his ATF career in 1993 in Cleveland, OH, conducting inspections of explosives and firearms dealers, as well as wineries and breweries
✅ Serving in key leadership roles, including his time with the National Firearms Act Branch and the Public Safety Branch (precursor to the Explosives Industry Programs Branch)
✅ Working as an area supervisor in Charleston, WV, before transitioning to ATF’s Field Management Staff in Washington, D.C.
✅ Spending 18 years as ATF’s Explosives Industry Liaison, building collaboration between ATF leadership and professionals in blasting, construction, avalanche control, space vehicle pyrotechnics, and other specialized fields
✅ Partnering with dedicated explosives specialists, educators, and industry investigators to enhance safety and compliance across the field
Throughout his career, Bill has been instrumental in bridging the gap between industry professionals and regulatory agencies, ensuring clear communication and a shared commitment to safety and best practices. His dedication to the explosives field has left a lasting impact on both industry professionals and government agencies alike.
