Fragblast Group becomes newest ISEE Section

February 2, 2003 -(Nashville, Tennessee, USA) The Board of Directors of the International Society of Explosives Engineers is pleased to announce the establishment of the Committee on Fragmentation by Blasting, formerly the Commission on Fragmentation by Blasting of the ISRM, as the newest section of the ISEE. In February of 2003, the Commission became the Committee on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting, the newest Section of the International Society of Explosives Engineers. Members comprise various working groups and serve as the permanent International Organizing Committee for the Fragblast Symposia.

The Commission on Fragmentation by Blasting was formed in 1991 to encourage international exchange of research results and new experience from engineering use of rock blasting as a tool in mining and construction engineering. Every three years, an International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting, now called Fragblast Symposium, is organized by the International Organizing Committee with the help of a National Organizing Commitee set up for each Symposium. The Chairman of the new Section is Bill Fourney, Department of Aerospace, University of Maryland.

Each Fragblast Symposium has its own local (national) Organizing Committee that will continue to operate the meetings independent of the Section and ISEE. The first International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting was held in Lulea, Sweden, in 1983. Other Fragblast Symposia were held in different locations worldwide; Keystone, Colorado, 1987; Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, 1990; Vienna, Austria, 1993; Montreal, Canada, 1996, South Africa, 1999; and Bejing, China, 2002. The next Symposia will be held in Santiago, Chile in 2005.

The Fragblast Journal is an interdisciplinary international quarterly publication. The contents of the journal reflect both the current state of research and the state of the art in engineering practice in the field of rock fragmentation by blasting. Papers cover all fields of engineering associated with the design, manufacture, testing and application of explosives in rock fragmentation, the breakage and movement of rock by blasting, as well as he prediction, control, assessment and evaluation of blasting. Reviews, case studies and educational studies are also published. The Editors-in-Chief are Peter Rossmanith, TU-Vienna, Institute of Mechanics, Vienna, Austria; and Bill Fourney, University of Maryland, Department of Aerospace, Maryland, USA.
