Education Foundation

The Society of Explosives Engineers Education Foundation was created to serve the long term educational interests of the industry by promoting explosives engineering for the public good through research, education and other constructive efforts.

More specifically, the Foundation encourages the inclusion of explosives instruction in engineering curricula, promotes the collection of information, provides scholarships, and promotes forums and media through which experience with the principles and techniques of explosives engineering can be taught, reported, discussed and published.

Our scholarship program is generally designed to offer college assistance to young engineers and students who express an interest in explosives related work and who enter an explosive related field of study, such as mining, construction, forestry, manufacturing, automotives, aerospace and other commercial and industrial areas.

Foundation scholarships are supported by chapters, corporate sponsors and individual members. When family and friends of Jerry McDowell, a society member who died in 1992, were looking for help in establishing a scholarship fund in Jerry's name, they looked to the Society first. We created an endowment fund financed by personal contributions and an annual golf outing. Employees of the Nelson Brothers Company, an explosives manufacturer, looked to the Society's Education Foundation to establish a fund in honor of founder Dugan Nelson who passed away in 1981.

In 2001, The Paul Muehl Memorial Scholarship was developed through the efforts of the Black Hills Chapter. Paul Muehl who was a blaster at the Crazy Horse Memorial was well known within the ISEE as a supporter of education for blasters. Mr. Muehl died of cancer in 1995. Through the efforts of chapter members, co-workers and members of the ISEE funds for this scholarship were raised through an education workshop which was held at the Crazy Horse Memorial in September of 2000.

The Bob Jeremiah Scholarship was organized by the Pacific Northwest Chapter in memory of Bob Jeremiah. Robert "BJ" Jeremiah who was a founding Board member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter and was considered a driving force in the work of the chapter. BJ Jeremiah died in May 1999 at the age of 51 after a long fight with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Mr. Jeremiah will be remembered as a man who worked hard for the industry.

International Society of Explosives Engineers Scholarship was developed through the contributions of ISEE Members who saw the benefit of supporting education for the future of the explosives industry. The ISEE Scholarship was made available for the first time in the year 2000. This award was significant in its being awarded to an international student. ISEE Members support all the scholarships offered through the SEE Education Foundation and these efforts will continue to assist students for the years to come.

In 2001-2002, two ISEE Chapter Scholarships were developed by the Northern Plains Chapter and the Rocky Mountain Chapter. Also, a memorial scholarship was established by the family and friends of Dr. Per-Anders Persson who was an Emeritus Professor at New Mexico Tech and a long time member of ISEE. Dr. Persson was well known in the commercial explosives industry for his contributions made over a lifetime career.

A scholarship was also established by friends of Tom Clark in his name. Tom Clark has had a long career in the commercial explosives industry and he continues today in the role of mentor and promoter of the industry. Mr. Clark works to provide education scholarships for those who desire a career in the explosives industry through his organization of the Annual Jerry McDowell Golf Tournament.
